Lake Minnetonka offers some of the finest fishing opportunities for a majority of Minnesota's freshwater fish! We get asked a lot about what type of equipment that is needed to get started. If you have been in a Gander Mountain or Cabelas lately you know that there are a ton of different types of rods, reels, and lures! Sometimes selecting the right equipment is overwhelming even for us seasoned fisher people! Below is a recommended list to get you started on the right track along with a site that you can directly purchase equipment from.
OPEN WATER
Panfish
5' - 7' Light to medium action spinning rod - with a reel capacity of 100-150 yards of 6LB test line
Line - 4LB-6LB mono
Bass, Northerns, Walleyes
6'6" - 7' Medium to Medium heavy spinning rod - with a reel capacity of 140-200 yards of 8LB test line
We recommend using 15-20 lb "super line", like fireline or power pro. Then use a swivel to tie a mono leader of 6LB-10LB test depending on what you are using.
Muskies
7'-9' Heavy Action casting rod - with a reel capacity of 300-400 yards of 80LB test line
